Holes- Analysis

I’ve finished ‘Holes’ today and would like to analyze it shortly. First of all, analysis was the most hard part of our homework and I’m glad that it has finished. At the beginning of the book I thought that it was not a children’s book as we know. Well, I changed my mind and now I think ‘Holes’ is a children’s book, but at least not boring and simple like the others.

There is a story in the book connected with the real story. We experience it via flashbacks. And it makes the real story more interesting.

As main themes it can be said; friendship, family, love and greed.

After reading his answers I figured out the reason why he took this topic in hand. Sachar's intention was to tell people how hot Texas is, and also that the workers have a lot of difficulties with that. I can say that he succeeds in giving his aim to readers. And I think there are some arguments of his aim in the book. It is often mentioned that the Camp Green Lake is so hot. Besides, the book starts with a talk about the Camp Green Lake.

PS: When I found out that we have a blog-assignment, I wasn't happy at all. But now I agree with Mr."Sir". :) I had fun and if we had an another boring assignment, it would make our holiday trouble. Well, I've finished my assignment and good luck to my friends!

Can Stanley survive? (Looking back)

Hey guys! I’ve recently read the 33rd chapter and I have about 60 pages to finish. I want to tell you shortly about what’s happened until now. For your information, the following text may include spoilers.

Stanley arrived to the camp, met with the others and adjusted to his new life and to dig up holes. There was one duty everyone had to do, to dig up holes in order to become good boys. Stanley was aware of that they were not digging up to become good boys; there must have been another reason. 

And he found it out, when he discovered something like a lipstick while digging a hole and at that moment, 'The Warden' showed up. She was being a total dictator over the camp.

By the way, Stanley and Zero became friends. But I think the biggest event was the escape of Stanley from the camp after a while Zero’s escape. It was too dangerous and everybody thought that Stanley and Zero would die, because no one can survive in such a wasteland without food and water. However, Stanley believed his great-great-grandfather’s story and thought that this desert was the same desert his great-great-grandfather survived. We’ll see whether it is true. I guess, this part is the most fascinating part of the book and I look forward to find out what will happen.

Zero (Character Analysis)

Hello everyone! I want to tell you about the most interesting character-well, I think so- in Holes.

His real name is Hector Zeroni and his nickname is Zero. He had never spoken to the others, until Stanley came to the camp, that’s reason why he is called Zero by the others. If someone asks him a question, he doesn’t want to answer it, so Mr.Pendanski says “Because there’s nothing inside his head.” (p.20) And I realized that Zero hates it. However, his head is working very well. Although he can’t read and write, his math is very good. Moreover, he can directly understand what Stanley teaches him. That means he is not an idiot like Mr.Pendanski said. I guess, he is ashamed and feels regret because of his ‘crime’ and so he is withdrawn.

I was really impressed when Zero dug up Stanley’s hole. Magnet stole a sack of sunflower seeds from Mr.Sir and Stanley took the rap, so he has been taken to the Warden’s cabin to be punished. That's why Zero dup up Stanley’s hole. When Stanley asked the reason why Zero took Stanley’s hole over, Zero said that Stanley wasn’t guilty and so he dug up his hole. After reading this event I liked Zero.

He is described as a dark skinned boy and “he was the smallest kid in group D”. Stanley thinks when Zero smiles, his mouth seems too big for his face.
